Barnet and Southgate College chooses GY-HM650 camcorders

Barnet College GY-HM650 in use
Barnet and Southgate College, one of the largest colleges in North London, has recently purchased two JVC GY-HM650 HD ENG camcorders to aid students undertaking its popular BTEC course in Creative Media Production. The second JVC camera was funded by Boreham Wood Football Club and both will be used as teaching tools in practical video production, allowing students to become skilled, experienced media professionals.

Creative Media Production at Barnet and Southgate College focuses on getting students ready for jobs in the media, as well qualifying them for higher education. The course addresses a wide variety of media subjects, including video production and editing, animation, film and documentary making. The Wood Street campus is renowned for their fantastic facilities including iMac editing suites and a green screen studio. To aid these facilities, Geoff Johnson from the college's Technical Department required advanced camcorders, delivering exceptional imagery and features perfect for productions with intuitive user-friendly controls – the GY-HM650 was the ideal candidate.

Creative Media Course leader, Michael Park, is very impressed with the functions and quality of the GY-HM650, "In the past, I opted to teach with a GY-HM100,  it was one of the first professional camcorders to store files in the native Quicktime format onto SD cards, making it easy for students to drag files straight into editing software with no hassle." He adds, "I chose the GY-HM650 camcorder because I have always been extremely happy with JVC's products and I want to build up a range of high quality cameras with similar settings and functions."

So far, students have used the GY-HM650 for their music video projects. Taner, who filmed his music video on a green screen, comments, "The camera is great for green screen work - it's picture quality is fantastic, making it very quick and easy to key later." It was Janice's first time using a professional camcorder too, and she added, "It was hard to use at first as the whole concept was so new to me but it has already given me invaluable experience working with a professional camera." Finally, Emmanuel says, "I can't wait to use it again - the camera provides all the control I need, with plenty of useful features, so I feel like a pro when I use it."

Barnet and Southgate College also works closely with Boreham Wood Football Club, offering students the opportunity to take the GY-HM650 out on location to film football matches and carry out interviews. Jamie, a first year student, states, "The camcorder is really easy to use and set up, and its built-in stereo microphone makes it ideal for capturing sounds on location." Jessica adds "I like the GY-HM650 because it's really high quality and the camera's compact size makes it easy to pack for filming events." Finally, Rico comments, "So far, we have filmed two matches with the GY-HM650 - the colours look great!"

Currently, post production work is via Apple Final Cut Pro X and Adobe Premiere. With the potential to install Avid over the coming months too, the GY-HM650’s native file recording in both .MOV and MP4 formats will ensure students' footage is ready to edit using any software the moment it's shot, resulting in a more efficient workflow. "In the near future, we plan to purchase some additional JVC cameras, as well as a mixer, to aid students in documentary filmmaking, multi-camera studio production and broadcasting," explains Michael Park. "Our students want to go onto university or progress into the media industry and JVC cameras offer the best professional experience."
